Services Available

Interpreting Services

We can provide spoken language interpreting for people whose first language is not English. If we are unable to provide a face to face interpreter we are able to offer interpreting over the telephone.

Sign language interpreters can also be booked for patients requiring this service.

Deafblind communicator guides can also be booked if required.

Please tell a member of staff as soon as possible if you or your family will need any of these services for a hospital appointment so the interpreter/communicator can be booked.

Contact: by email interpreter.bookings@hdft.nhs.uk or telephone 01423 553620

'Text Relay' telephone calls (previously called 'Type-talk')

If you are use the British Telecom 'Text Relay' service we can receive these calls, but please contact the main hospital switchboard on 01423 885959 who will advise the user department what to expect when the call is connected, to ensure your call is not rejected.

Neckloops for the deafened service user

If you are hard of hearing and use a hearing aid, neckloops are available for use so please ask a member of staff in the ward or department you are attending.

Hospital Communication Book

Each ward and department within the Trust now has a Hospital Communication Book available for patients and visitors.
These books are designed to help people who have difficulties understanding and / or communicating receive an equal service whilst in hospital.

The main aims of the book are to:
1. Give hospital staff basic information about the communication needs people may have.
2. To be a practical communication tool people can use to help communicate together.

Menus

A multicultural menu is available on the wards to meet different cultural and religious needs. Please ask a member of staff in the ward or department you are attending if this is not offered.

Chaplaincy

If you have any religious needs whilst you are a patient with us you can contact the Chaplaincy service. The chaplains are available to everyone and have contact details for other faiths and members of the British Humanist Society. Please see the Chaplaincy service pages for more information.
