Harrogate Hospital Porter, Jim Witham, has been honoured for his service to the NHS by being awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
“You could have knocked me down with a feather when I found out! My wife knew before me, but didn’t let on.
I love this job. All the people are fantastic. It’s fantastic to think I’m going to meet the Queen for doing something I love.”
Jim, a grandfather of five, started at the hospital in 1991 and has helped thousands of people.
A well known face around the hospital, Jim is always ready with a smile and a cheerful word. He was recognised with the Non-Clinical Colleague of the Year Award in 1999’s Christmas Oscars. After suffering a serious accident, Jim managed to recover and returned to work and now takes particular care to chat with patients.
HDFT Chairman, Sandra Dodson, commented, “This is a wonderful accolade and incredibly well deserved. Everyone who knows Jim will be delighted for him.”
