Trust maintain UNICEF Baby Friendly Status

The Trust have once again been successful at maintaining UNICEF Baby Friendly status. The Baby Friendly Initiative accredits maternity and community facilities that adopt internationally recognised standards of best practice in the care of mothers and babies.

Harrogate was first designated as a Baby Friendly hospital in 2002 and then after further assessment was reaccredited in 2004. This most recent accreditation means we have maintained our excellent standards of care for over six years and are still the only hospital in the PCT and one of only three in the strategic health authority to have gained this prestigious award. The staff on the unit were commended by UNICEF for their 'commitment and enthusiasm'. Maintaining these high standards of care as well as adopting other changes that have taken place in maternity services while our delivery rate increases is outstanding and a credit to the unit. Breastfeeding rates have increased from 69% (before adopting Baby Friendly Standards) to 85% last year.
