Orthopaedics

Orthopaedic surgery is well established and provides a wide range of orthopaedic services. These include arthroscopy examinations, hip and knee replacement and upper limb surgery such as wrist operations. 

The Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and their special interests are

  • Mr John Mitchell, Clinical Lead for Orthopaedics - a specialist in hip surgery

  • Mr David Lavalette - a specialist interest in foot and ankle surgery

  • Mr Nicholas London - a specialist interest in knee surgery

  • Mr Raymond Newman - general orthopaedic surgeon with a sub specialist interest in upper limb surgery

  • Mr Andrew Collier - general orthopaedic surgeon with a sub specialist interest in hand and wrist surgery

  • Mr Jon Conroy - a specialist interest in hip and knee  surgery
  • Mr Mark Farndon - a specialist interest in foot and ankle surgery

  • Mr David Duffy - a specialist interest in knee surgery

  • Mr Edward Powell-Smith - orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in hand and wrist surgery

  • Mr Charlie Talbot - trauma and orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in shoulder and elbow surgery

     

The department also includes the following support staff: 

  • One fellow in knee surgery

  • One fellow in hip surgery

  • One associate specialist

  • Six senior staff practitioners/ specialty doctors

  • Two specialist registrars

  • Five CT Year 1 and Year 2/ foundation year 2 doctors

  • One foundation year 1 doctor

All Orthopaedic Surgery, inpatient and outpatient services are available. Outpatients are also provided at Ripon Community Hospital. 

There are five main theatres, three of which are equipped for orthopaedic and prosthetic work with laminar flow air exchange which ensures the cleanest possible environment.   There is also a Day Surgery Unit together with two general theatres which are used for arthroscopies and minor operations. 

There are a total of 52 orthopaedic and trauma beds on Farndale Ward and Wensleydale Ward. There are also children's orthopaedic beds available on Woodlands Ward in Strayside Wing.

The Orthopaedic service is led by Mr Mitchell.   All out patient services are provided in a dedicated Out Patient facility in close vicinity to the Emergency department.

Pre operative assessment is well established within the orthopaedic department and is currently being extended to be provided as part of the Pre operative Assessment and Admissions Unit based on the first floor. 

Nurse led follow up is offered to most patients to aid their recovery and timely discharge from hospital.

Outreach Clinics

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust has established hospital outreach clinics at Yeadon Health Centre and Wetherby Health Centre. We aim to provide a range of high quality, easily accessible services along with diagnostics and therapies in the community, by providing care closer to home.
