Orthopaedics

The Orthopaedic Department in Harrogate comprises nine specialist Orthopaedic Consultants with fellows in hip and knee surgery and a full compliment of middle grade and junior doctors.  Our consultants offer specialist services in foot and ankle surgery, knee surgery (soft tissue, sports injuries and joint replacement), hip replacement and hip arthroscopy, shoulder and elbow surgery and replacement, and both simple and complex hand surgery. 

OUR CONSULTANTS:

Mark Farndon, MBBS BMedSCi (Hons) FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Mark is the Clinical Lead for Orthopaedics and the Sector Tutor for Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training. He graduated from Newcastle University Medical School with Distinction and then completed his Basic and Higher Surgical Training in Yorkshire. He undertook specialist fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery on the Wirral and knee surgery in Harrogate.

Mark principally manages foot and ankle conditions including arthroplasty and arthroscopic surgery of the foot and ankle, deformity correction and arthrodesis of the forefoot, mid foot, hind foot and ankle and the management of sports injuries.

Mark has a secondary interest in arthroscopic knee surgery and knee replacement.

Jon Conroy BSc MB ChB FRCS (Eng) FRCS (Tr & Orth) MSc

Jon Conroy has been a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon in Harrogate since 2006.  Fellowship trained in Brisbane Australia and Harrogate.  His specialty interest is in hip and knee surgery.  This includes hip and knee surgery and revision surgery.  Jon also provides a regional hip arthroscopy service for young adults for North and West Yorkshire.  Jon is Clinical Director for the Elective Care Directorate.

John Mitchell MB ChB FRCS (Tr & Orth)

John qualified from Bristol University in 1991. He completed his basic surgical training in Manchester and a Wishbone Trust research fellowship in Plymouth.  Following this he undertook his orthopaedic training in Yorkshire with a hip fellowship in Leeds.  Further training in hip resurfacing in Cardiff and minimal invasive hip surgery in Munich followed.  John was appointed to his current post in Harrogate in 2003 and offers a full and contemporary treatment of the adult arthritic hip specialising in hip resurfacing and hip replacement. 

Nick London MB BChir MA MD (Cantab) FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Following graduation from Cambridge University in 1989 Nick returned to his native Yorkshire to undertake his surgical training.  After 2 years of surgical research culminating in a MD higher degree he undertook a 6 year orthopaedic training programme and completed this with a fellowship in Australia with a leading knee surgeon.  Nick was appointed to his current post in Harrogate in 2000, specialising in all aspects of knee surgery from reconstruction following sports injuries or trauma, to treatments for arthritis including uni-compartmental and total knee replacement.

Andrew Collier MB ChB FRCSEd FRCS (Tr & Orth)

After completing his specialist orthopaedic training in York, Northallerton, Harrogate, Bradford and Leeds, where he was an Honorary Tutor, Andrew was appointed to his current post in 2001.  Whilst being a general orthopaedic surgeon he has a special interest in conditions of the hand and wrist.  He has been the National Hand Fellow in Oxford and an AO fellow in Boston Massachusetts USA.

Andrew's interests include hand and wrist conditions such as Dupuytren's surgery, thumb arthritis surgery, wrist trauma and arthritis surgery and nerve compression surgery, carpal-tunnel syndrome and ulnar neuritis.  He also continues to undertake general orthopaedic work including Exeter hip replacement and minor foot surgery.

David Lavalette BSc MBBS FRCS (Tr & Orth)

David Lavalette is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in surgery of the foot and ankle.  Following graduation in 1993 from Imperial College he trained in Bath and the Yorkshire region before completing his training with a 6 month fellowship in Australia.

David joined the team in Harrogate in 2005 to develop the foot and ankle service, he specialises in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery and has particular interests in arthroscopic and endoscopic surgery, ankle joint replacement and 1st MTP joint replacement, sports injuries and correction of deformity.  He also provides a children's orthopaedic service in collaboration with the Yorkshire Children's Orthopaedic Network.

David Duffy, MBBS MRCS FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Dave Duffy is a specialist knee surgeon with particular expertise in sports injuries and knee replacement surgery.  He has extensive experience in performing ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery and knee replacements.

His approach is directed at identifying the underlying cause of any knee pathology, this enables a treatment plan to address all aspects of knee function in order to optimise the results of treatment.

Edward Powell-Smith MBBS BSc FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Ed qualified from UCL Medical School and did his orthopaedic training on the South Coast before specialising in hand surgery.  He has completed fellowships at Chelsea and Westminster, which is a tertiary referral unit for hand trauma, and in the St Andrews Centre for Plastic Surgery as the BSSH fellow.  Ed undertakes all aspects of hand and wrist surgery with a particular interest in finger joint arthritis and complex wrist pathology.

Charlie Talbot MBChB MSc(Eng) FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Charlie Talbot is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.  Charlie trained in the Yorkshire region before embarking on a fellowship training at two internationally recognised units within the UK.  He brings that experience to Harrogate, and is establishing an arthroscopic shoulder and elbow service, as well as offering open surgery.

Rebecca Leigh MBBS MRCP (UK)

Rebecca Leigh has been an elderly care consultant in Harrogate since moving from a post in Teesside in 2009.  She joined the orthopaedic team in January 2012 to provide an orthopaedic geriatric service encompassing peri-operative care, falls and osteoporosis assessments, rehabilitation and discharge planning.  All patients with hip fractures are admitted under the shared care of Dr Leigh and the orthopaedic team.  She is also involved in the care of some non-hip trauma and elective patients.

Outreach Clinics

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust have established outreach clinics at Yeadon and Wetherby Health Centres to improve access to our services for patients from these areas.
