Pulmonary Service

What we do

We provide a specialist service to patients who have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and work as part of the hospital respiratory team.  The occupational therapy service may be provided at Harrogate District Hospital, Ripon Community Hospital or your home depending upon your individual needs. Therapy can include:

  •  Hospital based pulmonary rehabilitation programme (link to pulmonary rehabilitation programme –please add link) in which the occupational therapist will assist you whilst you participate in exercises and provide a group relaxation session afterwards. During the eight week programme, talks are given relating to managing stress and conserving energy for people with breathing conditions. Individual functional problems can be assessed whilst you are attending the group and any equipment can be supplied as appropriate.

  •  Assessment of activity of daily living abilities – assessment can be carried out in your home with the goal of improving quality of life. Advice can be given regarding pacing activity to breathing efficiency.

  •  Equipment can be supplied and fitted; instruction for use and adequate time for practicing using it safely can be carried out in your home environment, for example, the occupational therapist can arrange to be in your home for an assessment and anxiety management when you first use bath aids.

  • A community stress / anxiety management programme is available for you if you are assessed as very anxious or suffering from stress – you will have an individual treatment programme built around your preferences and needs. There are different  therapies  which can be offered which can include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques, visualisation and imagery, breathing control and deeper relaxation therapy.
