Minor Injury Unit (MIU)

The Minor Injury Unit (MIU) is a drop in service for the assessment and treatment of minor injuries.

Patients with a wide range of minor injuries including cuts, grazes, wounds, sprains, strains, broken bones and minor burns can drop in to the MIU without the need for an appointment.

The Minor Injury Unit provides an alternative to our Emergency Department. The MIU usually has shorter waiting times than the Emergency Department and can help reduce the strain on our emergency services.

Minor injuries

If you have a recent injury, our staff at the MIU can, in most cases, help and advise. If we’re unable to deal with your injury, we will advise and direct you to the most appropriate service.

Our Minor Injury Unit can treat:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Broken bones
  • Wound infections
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Minor head injuries
  • Insect and animal bites
  • Minor eye injuries
  • Injuries to the back, shoulder, and chest

The Minor Injury Unit cannot treat:

  • Chest pains
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Major injuries
  • Problems usually dealt with by a GP
  • Stomach pains
  • Gynaecological problems
  • Pregnancy problems
  • Allergic reactions
  • Overdoses
  • Alcohol-related problems
  • Mental health problems
  • Conditions likely to require hospital admission

Other options

If you find yourself in an emergency situation, please call 999 or visit your nearest Emergency Department. We encourage you to carefully consider your treatment options before arriving.

Within normal working hours, you can contact your GP for illness and/or medical conditions.

Please note that the GP Out of Hours Service operates out of the MIU at certain times. However, this is not a drop-in service, and you must call NHS 111 to make an appointment.

For dental problems please contact your dentist.
