Imaging Techniques

We offer many imaging techniques to diagnose injuries and conditions, including plain film X-rays, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, MRI, CT, mammography as well as BMD scans

CT (computerised tomography) examinations

A CT scan uses x-rays and a computer to produce detailed images of the inside of your body.

We perform a wide range of CT examinations including brain, body and limb imaging. Interventional procedures such as biopsies, joint injections and drainage insertions are also performed under CT control.

Location and opening hours

The CT Department is located within the main Radiology Department. We are open 8am-6.30pm, Monday to Friday and 8.30am-4.30pm on Saturdays. We also provide a 24/7 on-call service for emergency examinations. If you need to change your appointment please contact the CT Booking Office on 01423 553621 between 8.30am-5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Emergency Department X-ray service

We liaise with the staff in the Emergency Department to provide X-rays as efficiently as possible for patients who have been referred for a scan via ED. We also scan patients from the Orthopaedic Department.

We usually see patients in order of attendance, although clinically urgent patients do take priority.

Location and opening hours

The Emergency Radiology Department is located on the ground floor of Harrogate District Hospital, within the Emergency Department. We are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Ultrasound

During an ultrasound scan, we apply warmed gel to the skin and use high frequency sound to provide images of the soft tissue organs of the body. This procedure can be used for babies, children and adults of all ages and is safe to use during pregnancy.

We provide a wide range of ultrasound examinations including liver, kidneys, breast, muscles and joints, blood vessels and pregnancy.

We offer scans to patients with problems in early pregnancy six days a week via the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. Routine antenatal scans are coordinated by the antenatal clinic. The Department also offers a variety of GP ultrasound scans in the community, based at Wetherby and Leeds.

We provide a range of examinations and Ripon Community Hospital. Please let us know if it’s more convenient for you to have a scan at Ripon.

Specialist ‘one stop’ clinics, which combine several examinations in one visit, are available.
