Every child and young person has a School Nurse who is there to help them keep healthy and safe. Much of the health care for children and young people with SEND will be delivered through universal, preventative services. This means the School Nurse will offer the same service to all children and young people whatever their needs. Sometimes the School Nurse will adapt the way in which they support you to best suit your individual needs.
If you are a young person with complex or enhanced needs, your School Nurse can support you or help you get the appropriate support you need. The School Nurse may contribute to your Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) and attend meetings with other professionals that support you so that you can achieve your goals set out in your EHCP.

Complex or enhanced needs may include any of the following:
- You may be ill
- You may have a disability
- You may have a complex or long-term health need
- You may have special educational needs
- You may have a mental health problem
School Nurses continue to help you whether you attend a school or not and will support young people up until they are 25 if they have a SEND.
The School Nurse will always take your views into account and make sure that you are asked about any decisions that are made about your care. You can go to your School Nurse for help and advice on anything to do with your health – whether you’ve hurt yourself, feel ill or just need someone to talk to.
