Neil Thompson has recently been awarded the prestigious Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Award from NHS England in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the Trust’s Care Support Worker Buddy Programme on Oakdale Ward.
Neil was nominated by the Practice Educator Team, who highlighted his commitment to supporting new staff, fostering inclusion, and helping colleagues thrive from their very first day. His nomination was reviewed by a regional panel of Chief Nurses and Support Worker representatives from across Humber and Yorkshire, who unanimously recognised the significant impact of his work.
This award is a remarkable achievement. Across the Humber and Yorkshire region there are more than 27,500 support workers, and over the past five years only 100 individuals have received this highly respected award.
Neil’s dedication to supporting others is evident in everything he does. He leads by example, inspiring both the colleagues he supports and those he works alongside within the Oakdale team. One example of this is the thoughtful “Welcome to Your New Work Family” guide that he created for new starters. Neil also takes the time to personally contact colleagues before their first day, introducing himself, answering questions, and helping them feel valued and welcomed from the outset.
Through his outstanding mentoring and support, Neil helps ensure that new colleagues develop confidence, skills and the highest standards of care. His commitment has a direct impact on patient experience, as the compassionate and supportive culture he fosters enables colleagues to deliver exceptional care from the beginning of their careers with the Trust.
Neil was presented with the award by Eileen Aylott from NHS England during a surprise celebration attended by his Oakdale colleagues, members of the Practice Educator Team, and his family.
