Colleagues from Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) will run in the world’s biggest half marathon on Sunday 8 September 2024 to raise funds for the Great Start in Life Foundation; a new branch of Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity (HHCC).
As HDFT’s footprint has expanded across the North East of England and Yorkshire, the Great Start in Life Foundation has been established to raise funds to enhance HDFT’s children’s public health services that support children, young people and their families.
To support the launch of the foundation, HDFT colleagues are stepping up to the starting line to make a difference for services across County Durham, Darlington, Gateshead, Middlesbrough, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland and Wakefield.
Ryan Tinkler from the Stockton 0-19 Service who is taking part in the run said “I’m motivated to complete the Great North Run as I know the money that I have raised for the Great Start in Life Foundation can really kick-start a positive change in someone’s life.”
Hosting up to 60,000 runners, the half marathon begins in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, crossing over the Tyne Bridge into Gateshead, before heading down to South Shields by the coast.
The Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity (HHCC) Team will also be at this year’s Great North Run, Runners’ Village to cheer on participants and celebrate alongside a number of other NHS Charities.

Yvonne Campbell Acting Business Development, Charity and Volunteer Manager said, “I’m delighted to be taking part in this year’s Great North Run and fundraising for our Great Start in Life Foundation.
“It is a cause close to my heart, supporting children, young people and their families across a vast part of the North of England.
“Every penny raised will benefit children and young people to ensure they have the best start in life.”
Matt Graham, HDFT’s Director of Strategy, who is also taking part in the run said “This week I had the pleasure of visiting our team in Chester Le Street and heard about the amazing work our youth practitioners do in local communities to increase the opportunities and aspirations of children and young people, often in challenging situations.
“The Great Start in Life Foundation will raise funds to support more young people and expand what our services can offer, so the more we can raise the better!”
