Two members of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust staff are “over the moon” after scooping top awards at a national ceremony.

Lara Chapman, Specialist Podiatrist and Phil Bremner, Macmillan Welfare and Benefits Advisor, both won big at this year’s Advancing Healthcare Awards, which took place in London last Friday (12 April).

Lara won a Rising Star Award for her work as a Specialist Podiatrist with Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and a Clinical Research Associate with the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine (part of the University of Leeds).

Phil picked up the Macmillan Award for Leadership and Innovation in Cancer Care for his work providing welfare and benefits advice to cancer patients at Harrogate District Hospital’s Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre. His post is one of only a handful of welfare and benefit services to be provided from a cancer centre itself. On Phil’s nomination, the judges said: “Phillip’s passion for his role was very evident in the quality of the service he provides, going the extra mile to ensure all his patients’ needs are met.”

The Advancing Healthcare Awards 2019 were held at the Park Plaza Hotel, London, and included a celebratory lunch. The Advancing Healthcare Awards programme, which aims to cross boundaries and foster partnership, is open to allied health professionals (AHPs) and healthcare scientists as well as those who work alongside them in support roles.

Following the ceremony, both Lara and Phil declared that they were “delighted” and “over the moon” to have won. Lara said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have been awarded a Rising Star Award. To be recognised as a rising star on a national level and presented with my award by the College of Podiatry is fantastic!”

Phil said: “The Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre at Harrogate District Hospital is rare in the sense that we provide NHS welfare and benefits services on-site. The impact of the service has been incredibly beneficial to patients, with over £6 million pounds of annualised benefits having been successfully claimed for them – it’s brilliant that our work has been recognised on a national scale. I’m over the moon to have won.”

Lara’s Rising Star Award was presented by Claire Angus, Director of Membership Services with the College of Podiatry, with Phil’s award being presented by June Davis, National Cancer Rehabilitation Lead for Macmillan Cancer Support.
