A new initiative has been launched by Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT), encouraging new parents to take the first steps on an early reading journey with their child.

Harrogate District Hospital’s Library and Knowledge Service has partnered with the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) to help make reading a meaningful part of the care experience for families with young children.

On SCBU, parents can now choose from a curated collection of books including stories, rhymes, poetry and bi-lingual titles, and are supported by SCBU’s nursing team in reading to their babies during periods of skin-to-skin contact.

Every family also receives a BookStart pack to take home with their baby, which are supplied by the North Yorkshire Public Library Service.

Research shows that early exposure to voices and language creates a strong foundation for development, with long-term social and educational benefits alongside positive medical outcomes.

This initiative reflects Harrogate District Hospital’s commitment to providing family-centred care and recognises that preserving everyday rituals like reading can make a profound difference during periods of stress or change. With dedicated resources and support, families on SCBU can strengthen emotional bonds and develop their own unique ways of communicating.

2026 is the National Year of Reading, the biggest campaign in a generation designed to help more people rediscover the joy of reading and make it part of their everyday lives. The campaign celebrates the importance of books and their ability to bring calm and comfort throughout life’s challenges.

Breeda Columb, Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and AHPs, said “During the National Year of Reading, we wanted to make sure families on SCBU have every opportunity to experience the joy of reading. We understand the impact a parent’s voice and storytelling can have on a child’s development, and we’re proud to be embedding this into the care we provide every day.”

Hilary O’Callaghan, Knowledge and Library Service Manager, added “We are delighted to support the wonderful team on SCBU in providing a library for parents and carers which help them connect with their babies and support their own wellbeing.”
