Harrogate District Hospital’s Intensive Care Team are all Total Warriors

Posted on: Wednesday 31 May 2017

On Saturday 24 June, 52 of Harrogate District Hospital’s Intensive Care Practitioners are taking on the Total Warrior Challenge to raise vital money for the Intensive Care Unit. The team is made up of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians, healthcare assistants and pharmacists who all work together to care for our most critically ill patients at Harrogate District Hospital.

The Intensive Care Team is passionate about the unit they work in and is extremely proud to have recently been rated as ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission. However, they know there is always more that can be done to improve the quality of their patients’ experience, so the team decided to take it upon themselves to raise the money needed to buy some of the equipment they want to improve both patient care and the experience they have when on the unit.

By taking on this challenge as a team, they are aiming to raise £10,000 towards audio-visual equipment to stimulate patients during their prolonged rehabilitation.

Eve Geldart, Intensive Care Sister, said: “Our dream is for every patient to have access to appropriately designed audio-visual equipment, helping to transform their intensive care experience.

“Many of our patients require prolonged periods of rehabilitation, sometimes into the months. Sadly many of our rooms have no views and, during busy periods, can be noisy. We do not have enough equipment to guarantee that every patient can even listen to the radio. Audio-visual equipment can restore some sort of normality, help patients relax, connect them with loved ones and aid communication.”

The challenge, at Bramham Park, Leeds, involves 12km of mud, ice waters, electricity and fire and will be take a huge team effort to make sure everyone gets around the course. Although, set in the beautiful grounds of Braham Park with a stately home, rolling hills and woodland, this is not a stroll in the park! With 30 punishing obstacles this is one challenge worth the sponsorship!

Why not join their team and help them reach their target, or if you are not ready for such a challenge, please sponsor them and make a difference to your Intensive Care Unit!
