The Maxillofacial Team in Harrogate is a consultant-led service, run in conjunction with the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals Trust. Visiting consultants carry out services at Harrogate District Hospital throughout the week.
Our treatments range from complex surgical procedures for patients with oral cancers, facial skin cancers, facial deformities and salivary gland disease, to the management of impacted and buried teeth and roots.
We offer a wide range of services to investigate and treat diseases of the face, mouth, jaws, and neck. These include:
- Dentoalveolar surgery
- Head / Facial skin cancer surgery
- Intraoral cancer diagnosis
- Management of Salivary Gland Disease
- Management of maxillofacial trauma (as part of the York service)
- Orthognathic (dentofacial deformity) surgery
Referral
Patients are referred to us either by their General Dental Practitioner or GP. Patients may also be referred by the Emergency Department, the inpatient wards or other hospital departments.
Once a referral is received by the department, it will be triaged. If accepted, the patient will be offered an appointment on the appropriate clinic. If the referral has been sent in on the Fast Track Pathway (suspected or concerned about a possible cancer diagnosis), the patient will receive an appointment within 2 weeks of us receiving the referral. All routine referrals will be added to our waiting list.
If the referral is rejected, a letter outlining the reasons for rejection will be sent to the referrer.
The Maxillofacial Department
Your first visit to the Maxillofacial Department will be for a consultation only. We may need you to have an x-ray to help decide on a treatment plan. No surgery (including biopsies or teeth extraction) will take place at this appointment.
Once you’ve been examined and surgery has been agreed as an appropriate method of treatment, you will be added to our surgical waiting list. If the surgery will be carried out in the department under local anaesthetic, we will make an appointment for you to come back. If your surgery is taking place in the Day Surgery Unit (either under general or local anaesthetic), our Admissions team will add you the waiting list. If your surgery requires an overnight stay, it will be done at York Hospital. These options will all be discussed with you at your initial consultation appointment.

The Maxillo-Facial and Orthodontic Department is open from 8.30am-5pm, Monday-Friday.
