Outpatient Department

Last year, we saw 283,600 outpatients across Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. Many of these patients are seen at our Outpatient Department at Harrogate District Hospital.

The busy Outpatient Department is located on the ground floor of Harrogate District Hospital and offers assessment, treatment, and clinics for a range of different conditions.

Many specialities are offered in the Outpatient Department, and you will be directed to different waiting areas depending on the service you are accessing.

North waiting area

You will be directed to the north waiting area if you require the following services:

  • General medicine
  • Ear, nose, and throat
  • Respiratory
  • Neurology
  • Elderly care
  • Diabetes

East waiting area

You will be directed to the north waiting area if you require the following services:

  • General surgery
  • Gynaecology
  • Urolology
  • Breast clinic
  • Colorectal including percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation

West waiting area

The west waiting area is used for patients accessing ophthalmology, orthoptic, and optometry services, including:

  • Urgent referral clinics (emergencies only)
  • Ophthalmic imaging
  • Laser treatment
  • Minor surgery
  • Cataract clinics
  • Diabetic services
  • Glaucoma service
  • Ocular motility
  • Diplopia clinics
  • Stroke vision assessment
  • Paediatric clinics
  • Squint
  • Visual stress
  • Special Educational Needs
  • Vision screening services
  • Visual field assessment
  • Ophthalmic photography
  • Specialist glaucoma

Outreach services

In addition to our hospital-based services, we also offer outreach services in Alwoodley, Wharfedale, Yeadon, Chapeltown, Wetherby and at Mowbray Square Health Centre in Harrogate. Ophthalmic intra-vitreal treatment is only offered at Mowbray Square

Infection prevention and control

To protect our vulnerable patients, we ask the patients attending clinics and appointments comply with our infection prevention and control rules. Please:

  • Use the hand gel provided when entering and leaving the Department;
  • Do not attend if you have been ill with diarrhoea or vomiting in the last 48 hours;
  • Do not accompany anyone if you have been ill with diarrhoea or vomiting in last 48 hours.

Opening hours

The main Outpatient Department (north and east waiting areas) at Harrogate District Hospital is open from 8am–8.30pm, Monday-Friday.

The Ophthalmology Outpatient Department (west waiting area) at Harrogate District Hospital is open Monday-Friday, 8.30am – 5pm, and Saturday, 8am-5pm.

We accept referrals from healthcare professionals, GPs and clinical nurse specialists.
