Our physiotherapists and occupational therapists work closely with other healthcare professionals to provide rehabilitation for amputee patients and patients who have suffered from strokes or have a neurological condition.
We aim to see patients on the wards according to their need. The frequency of these visits will vary, as many patients are unable to tolerate daily treatment when they are first admitted to hospital. As the patient progresses, we will work together to achieve the maximum level of independence. In addition to this, we help patients plan for discharge and manage daily living once they leave hospital.
Stroke, neurology and amputee rehabilitation
Amputee patients
We provide a range of rehabilitative support, including:
- Continued inpatient rehabilitation following surgery to ensure a safe discharge from hospital;
- Functional rehabilitation for patients who are at home and require ongoing support in daily living activities;
- Moving, balance and walking re-education
Stroke patients
Our services for patients who have suffered a stroke include:
- Care and support for those staying in Harrogate District Hospital’s Acute Stroke Unit;
- Following discharge from the hospital, the Community Stroke and Neuro Team will see patients in the community for ongoing rehabilitation where appropriate;
- Referral to other agencies for ongoing care requirements;
- An outpatient service to progress rehabilitation
Neurological patients (adults)
We provide rehabilitation support in a range of settings according to need. This includes:
- Acute neurological rehabilitation for patients on Oakdale Ward;
- Ongoing rehabilitation for medically stable patients at Lascelles Rehabilitation Unit;
- Outpatient assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with neurological conditions;
- Patient education and exercise groups;
- Management of those with neurological conditions
Outpatients
While we provide much of our rehabilitation in hospital, we also offer ongoing outpatient care to ensure that you are comfortable and coping at home.
When you first attend an outpatient rehabilitation appointment in the Therapy Services Department, your therapist will carry out a full assessment of your abilities and needs. He or she will then put together a treatment plan which will be discussed fully with you. The amount of treatment sessions you require will vary according to need, and you will have the opportunity to evaluate the success of your rehabilitative treatment with your therapist.
You may wish to bring a pair of shorts to your first appointment. This ensures that you can be fully assessed.
If you have multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s, you will be put on an ‘open access’ treatment plan. This enables you to contact us and ask to be reviewed by the therapists without having to go through your GP.
Opening times
We work Monday to Friday from 8am-4.30pm.
We provide an assessment service to newly diagnosed stroke patients at weekends and bank holidays to ensure they are assessed quickly.
Location
Our neurological, stroke and amputee outpatients are seen in the Therapy Services Department at Harrogate District Hospital, or within the Lascelles Unit.
Inpatient amputee rehabilitation takes place on Oakdale Ward.
Stroke care (both acute and inpatient rehabilitation) takes place on Oakdale Ward. The Community Stroke Team visit patients at their place of residence in the wider community.
Inpatient rehabilitation for people with neurological disorders takes place on Oakdale Ward for acute conditions. Once stable, the patient is seen on the Lascelles Unit.
Referrals
All referrals are from hospital consultants or GPs, and specialist nurses and therapy colleagues (with prior agreement from a GP/Consultant).
Referrals must be made through the Therapy Services Department at Harrogate District Hospital, where the Department will triage referrals to support patients to be seen in the location most appropriate to their needs.
