Work experience

At Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, we understand the value of high quality work experience placements. For students making important career choices, the opportunity to understand how a place of employment works is invaluable, and helps to build an impressive skill set.

We offer a range of work experience placements for undergraduates and students aged 14-19 years in both clinical and non–clinical areas.

Please remember that it takes time to consider applications for work experience and make the necessary arrangements, therefore all applications should be received with at least three months’ notice.

All applications should be received by the work experience Co-ordinators at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) and placements should not be organised through personal contacts or directly with departments.

Application criteria

We receive many applications for work experience placements, but due to the size of our organisation, the number of opportunities we can offer is limited and we cannot guarantee a placement. We can usually offer placements for three days although some departments are only able to offer placements for one day. To make the process as fair as possible, we have application criteria in place and to be considered for a work experience placement with us, you must:

  • Attend any of the local school/colleges that is served by Harrogate District Hospital, of which HDFT is the closest geographically
  • Have a postcode that falls into the geographical area served by Harrogate District Hospital

Children of Trust employees, regardless of postcode may apply. However, these students must submit an application through the official process.

We regret that we are unable to accept applications from anyone who does not fit within the above criteria.

Local school/college students

We offer an allocated number of placements to each local school or college. If you wish to apply for one of these placements, please contact the careers department at your school or college.

The careers department will be able to answer your questions and provide you with the appropriate application form. All applications must be signed by the named tutor at your school or college before submission. If you are unsure who to contact at your school or college then please contact the work experience Co-ordinators at the HDFT using the contact details listed below.

Adult placements

These placements are suitable for those seeking employment opportunities and interested in a career in the NHS, and those in employment and requiring shadowing experience to attain accreditations or skills. The Trust offers up to 10 working days placements in both clinical and non-clinical departments. For more information click here.

If you are an undergraduate student, please find some information below on the available placements and who you should contact.
